“Fish Live in Water” – Art Exhibitionby Marjo Talvensaari and Hilkka Ukkola

The lobby of the Cultural Centre features works by Kemijärvi-based artist Marjo Talvensaari, known for her detailed and vibrant drawings filled with imaginative characters and story-like elements. Her art has been exhibited widely across Finland, including in Kemijärvi, Rovaniemi, Helsinki, Kokkola, and several notable art museums and galleries.

Talvensaari has studied visual arts at Lehtimäki College and the Kaarisilta Art School, and she is a member of the Artists’ Association of Lapland.

The exhibition also includes works by Hilkka Ukkola, an artist born in Sodankylä and active since the 1970s in both Finland and abroad. Ukkola is inspired by underwater worlds and traditional Japanese ink techniques. Her pieces often depict fish and aquatic life using an ancient printmaking method she began practicing in 2025. When applied to delicate Japanese paper, the ink creates a rippling, water-like effect.

Ukkola studied at the Finnish Art Academy School (now the Academy of Fine Arts) and was awarded a state artist pension in 2011. She currently lives in Muonio.
