Preventive substance abuse work

Preventive substance abuse work is an important part of promoting health and well-being and is based on the Act on the organisation of preventive substance abuse work.

Preventive substance abuse aims to reduce the use of and access to drugs and gambling. The aim is to prevent substance abuse, particularly among children and young people, and to reduce risky use among adults. Sharing information on the effects of substance abuse and gambling and on how to manage them can also help to change attitudes. Substance use can cause a range of health problems, including cardiovascular disease and cancer. Preventive drug use aims to reduce these risks and diseases.

Successful drug prevention work requires cooperation between different actors: authorities, organisations, communities and businesses. It is also a matter for every citizen, and everyone can contribute to raising awareness and stimulating debate.
