Collection management

Magazines and newspapers

The library collection meets your needs. Our collection includes books, magazines, music, films, games, audio books, microfilms, maps and e-resources.

Books and music are usually borrowed for 28 days, magazines and films for 14 days.

You can also borrow items from the library: sports equipment, video projector, dvd and record players, puzzles… Items can be borrowed for 7 or 14 days and cannot be borrowed from the library.

We regularly put our materials out to tender.

We order books through the Procurement Portal. Procurement is done on a weekly basis: books usually appear on the Procurement Portal 3-6 months before they are printed. Books of particular local interest are acquired for the book collection.

We review our collection of newspapers every year. Magazines are purchased within the limits of the budget. Many of the magazines are free of charge to the library and others are donations to us, such as party magazines. The collection of printed journals is supplemented by e-journals.

Films are bought from three different suppliers. Since the films are subject to copyright payments, they cannot be bought except from the suppliers who hold the rights of representation for the films in question.

Music lending and consequently buying (and supply) has declined in recent years. We are therefore looking for tips from customers on how to buy music

Electronic e-resources

E-resources include magazines, books, audio books and films. We belong to the Nordic eLibraries community, which includes the public libraries of Kainuu, Lapland and North Ostrobothnia. The right to borrow e-resources, i.e. the licence, must be renewed every year, and the collection can therefore change a lot from year to year: some are removed, others are replaced. In 2025, we will join the joint municipal e-library, which will include e-books and audiobooks and periodicals. Newspapers, music, films, music manuals and others (ballet, concerts) will remain in the PeK collection.

Supply requests

We welcome requests and will implement them wherever possible. You can submit your request via the online library lapinkirjasto.finna.fi or directly to the library staff or the feedback box.

Donations

You can donate fiction to the library; classics or new books. Not all donated books become part of the library collection. We do not accept donations of reference books unless they are brand new. Always ask before donating; there are not always staff to handle donations. We cannot accept films, as films in the library’s collection must have paid copyright fees.

Storage and depreciation

Without storage and removals, the material would not fit on the library’s shelves. It is recommended that the proportion of material under 5 years old in the open collection should be only 40%. The library stores less borrowed material, material in poor condition or older material. The Kemijärvi library has an open storage area, which you can visit yourself during the service hours.

The number of items removed each year is at least the same as the number of new items added to the library. After the removal, the item is put up for sale at the library’s removals bookshop or directly for paper collection. Books still in the collection are not sold and cannot be reserved for purchase. Feedback on the collection is welcome.

Journals

The library’s computers, tablets and TVs can use the ePress service, which offers Finnish newspapers in visual versions, e-leaflets. The library has a single licence for the service, which means that one customer at a time can read the newspaper through the software. The newspapers are available as soon as they are published. The selection includes mainly local newspapers, but also, for example, Helsingin Sanomat, Kaleva and Turun Sanomat.

PressReader contains more than 7,500 newspapers and magazines from over 90 countries in more than 50 languages. The magazines are available in digital visual versions and include both hobby newspapers and the best-known newspapers. The service is available in libraries via a direct link. PressReader can also be accessed remotely by logging in to the online library with your library card number and PIN, selecting e-resources from the user account menu and clicking on the link to PressReader.

The eMagz collection of e-journals in the Library of Lapland is remote, which means you can also read the magazines at home from your own device. I can find the collection via the online library: lapinkirjasto.finna.fi and there eKirjasto. To access the service, log in with your library card number and a four-digit PIN code. Please note that there is a limited number of licences available, so the service will notify you if a licence is already in use by someone else.
